Coming from a mom with a serious sweet-tooth, it's a beautiful thing when your daughter begs you to let her make fudge.
I don't promise I'll post everyday. I don't promise the pictures will be fantastic. I don't promise this will always be super interesting. But I'll try.

Happy Birthday Buddy-Boy
Yes, the cake is weird. He wanted a Hot Wheels cake. So this is a Hot Wheels track. Lame, I know.
Things that make Erik, Erik:1. He must wander as he's getting dressed. I don't think he could accomplish the task if I made him stand in one place.
2. He was a lovely lisp.
3. He hates conflict (but you already knew that).
4. He's a great reader and has very deliberate handwriting.
5. Science is his favorite subject in school.
6. He loves to wrestle. And tackle. And be tackled.
7. He's not affectionate, but will put up with a smooch on his nice cheeks from his mom every once in a while.

Shelbi's science fair was this morning. Unfortunately, I had to wait around for the city roof inspector. Finally he came and went and I rushed over to the middle school to see Shelbi with her project. I got there just as they were announcing the awards. Shelbi took first place in her division. Then they announced over-all winner: Shelbi! It's a good day to be Shelbi Foster's mom.
I really don't want to be one of those Moms who brags on her kids all the time. But this was definitely the best thing that happened today. What? You'd rather have a picture of the roof inspector and his gender-neutral assistant named "J.J."?

Shelbi's Christmas band concert
I have a feeling I'm going to have a lot of pictures that look just like this one for years to come.

What do you do at a Hot Wheels themed birthday party? Race Hot Wheels, of course.
Erik's friend Javier, in the red shirt, told Erik he was going to have a contest to see who could get the messiest eating his cupcake. Ryan gave him a run for his money. After that contest, Erik announced his own contest of who could stay the cleanest. There's no question who won.

Sydney's Christmas choir concert. Here she's doing Silent Night in sign language with her BFF Emma.

Time for Christmas recitals.
Shelbi convinced me to play a duet with her. Yikes. I messed up.
Sydney switched to guitar recently. She has lucked out with the nicest teacher in the history of guitar teachers. We love Mr. Steve.

Went to both girls' spelling bees today. You probably already know my thoughts on the subject. We've had good and bad experiences, but this year's bee was pretty uneventful. I don't think either girl had grand ideas of winning; neither of them put much work into studying. It turns out two sisters won. The winner from Shelbi's school has won five years in a row. Hard to beat that.

When Shelbi was little, I couldn't wait to start doing things with her that I loved doing as a kid. One of those things was watching Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer at Christmastime. This was before DVR, so we waited until it was actually on t.v., commercials and all. She was four the first time she watched it. I made apples and caramel dip to eat while watching. Somehow she remembered that the next year, and every year after that and so a tradition was born.
These days we have Rudolph on video. Not quite the same as anticipating the one night you can watch it. But at least our treats have improved. And yes, I did make the kids eat on sheets to avoid a mess. If you had seen what the sheet under Ryan looked like afterward, you would understand.

Stupid plant.
The first thing I saw when I walked into Sam's Club this morning were huge poinsettia plants for sale. Poinsettias are my favorite Christmas decoration. I bought one to put on my kitchen table. When I got it home and removed the plastic that was wrapped around it, half of the stems fell out. Then when I moved it, half of the ones left fell out. In the picture above, only those tall stems in the back are actually still attached. The other ones are just haphazardly stuffed back in the dirt until my dinner company leaves tonight.

Syd's been talking about her 4th grade musical for weeks. She's been telling us it's hilarious! We have different ideas of hilarious. It was very cute. Ironically, when Shelbi was in the 4th grade, she told me the same thing about her program. Tonight, Shelbi could hardly sit through Syd's.
I knew Sydney had a part, but it turns out it was a solo singing part. If I had known that I would have taken video. Oh well.
(I don't know why there's a skeleton.)

Would you think less of me if I admitted that I still like Legos? Jeff was sneaky and bought this Christmas village set when we were at the Lego store. I have to admit that it was a little hard for me to share. (I might be a nerd.)
My eager helpers.
Isn't it cool?

Playing around with the Bitners.
The splits contest. Clearly Sydney won.
It's like a rule that boys must wrestle.

Today was a perfect day-after-Thanksgiving. A lot of pie eating, and sitting around. Tonight the older folks went to a movie while the kids stayed home with a video.
So I got to watch this:
And didn't have to watch this:
It was a win-win.

Mmm, Thanksgiving.
Jill's family joined us this year. These boys had a ball. They spent more time planning this "concert," from their cool clothes to the perfect venue to composing lyrics, than actually putting it on.
The rest of us, including some lovely sister missionaries.
He just loves doing dishes.

Amarillo knows how to do winter right. It's cool enough that I get to wear my sweaters, and it snows just enough for us to enjoy it a few times a year, but melts just when we're sick of it.
I don't think I could take a whole winter of this.
